Eviction Rate vs. Ethnicity Distribution

ethnicity distribution vs eviction rate

The dark blues represented in the White Map are consistent with the ethnic diversity of America. In 2016 the Kaiser Family Foundation reports the following split:

  • White alone – 61%
  • Black or African American alone – 12%
  • Hispanic or Latino – 18%

There is no publicly available data that creates a direct nexus between the percentage of evictions broken down by ethnicity. However, EvictionLab.org does provide us with the above analysis that shows eviction rates tend to be higher in communities densely populated by African Americans.

This research uses data from The Eviction Lab at Princeton University, a project directed by Matthew Desmond and designed by Ashley Gromis, Lavar Edmonds, James Hendrickson, Katie Krywokulski, Lillian Leung, and Adam Porton. The Eviction Lab is funded by the JPB, Gates, and Ford Foundations as well as the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. More information is found at evictionlab.org.
